Biographies

Dr Audrey Dawson OBE

Dr Dawson graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1956. She worked initially as lecturer in medicine, and subsequently as senior lecturer in haematology and honorary consultant haematologist (1967 to 1988). She moved into the NHS in Grampian, with honorary clinical senior lecturer status in the University. In 1991, Dr Dawson was made OBE for services to medicine in North East Scotland. She served as a member of the University Court until September 2004.


Miss Anne HarperAnne Harper

Anne Harper graduated from the University in 1973. She was a Manager with BP, latterly in charge of External Affairs in Scotland.  She has been a lay member of HM Inspectorate of Schools, a member of the Scottish Churches Industrial Mission and a member of the Executive of the Scottish Council of the European Movement.  She has served as a member of the General Teaching Council for Scotland and Vice Chairman, Conservative Group for Europe.  Between 1996 and 1998 she was President of the Scottish Oil Club. She is currently Chairman of the Gordon Cook Foundation. Anne has served on the University Court, was a member of the Department of Accountancy Liaison Group at Aberdeen University, and served as a director of AURIS.


Mr Malcolm HuttonMalcolm Hutton

Malcolm Hutton has a vast amount of experience in the financial sector. He is Chairman of Global Philanthropic. He retired as a Senior Director of Bell Lawrie White in 2001. Prior to that his career has included posts as a Senior Director at Allied Provincial Securities Ltd, many years as a Partner at Parsons & Co (later to merge to become Allied Provincial) and previously at Abercromby & Stott. Malcolm Hutton was a General Commissioner of Income Tax (Aberdeen and Kincardine Divison); and has been involved in various other charitable organizations. 


Dr Maitland Mackie CBE LLD

Chairman of Mackies Ltd and Farmdata Ltd. Dr Mackie was also previously Chairman of Grampian Enterprise Ltd and Director of the Rowett Research Institute.

 

 


Dr Alistair Mair MBEAlistair Mair

Dr Mair graduated from the University in 1957 with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career with Rolls Royce in Glasgow in 1957 and became a Product Centre Manager. From 1960 he served a three year Short Service Commission in the Royal Air Force. He was appointed MD of Caithness Glass in 1971 and retired as Chairman and MD in 1998. He has been Chairman of CBI Scotland and President of the British Glass Manufacturers Confederation. He has been a non-executive director of Grampian Television and of Crieff Hydro where he was latterly Chairman. Dr Mair joined the University Court in 1993 and was Chancellor’s Assessor from 2000 to 2010. He continues as Chairman of the Trustees of UASLAS, the University’s non-academic pension fund, and represents the University on the board of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). He has been involved in the University Library Project from the beginning and continues to fundraise in the UK and US. He was awarded an MBE in 1987 and a LLD from the University in 2004.


Mr Sandy Manson Bcom CASandy Manson

Sandy Manson is the CEO of Johnston Carmichael, Scotland’s largest independent accountancy firm. Sandy joined the firm in 1991 and was appointed Partner and a member of their policy board soon after. In 1997, he was appointed Managing Partner of the Aberdeen practice and specialised in advising private industry companies. In 2007, he was appointed CEO of the Scottish firm. Sandy is involved in numerous local organisations and is a Burgess of the City of Aberdeen, and a member of Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen Golf Clubs.


Professor Michael MestonMichael Meston

Emeritus Professor Michael Meston is a leading authority on the law of succession in Scotland. Professor Meston has lectured at the University of Glasgow and later became Professor of Scots Law at the University of Aberdeen.

 

 


Ms Anne Minto OBE

Anne Minto was Group Human Resources Director for Centrica plc  and sat on the Centrica Executive Committee from 2002 until her retirement in 2011.  She graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a law degree in 1974 and also completed a post graduate diploma at Robert Gordon University in Personnel Management.  After qualifying as a lawyer she worked in a number of senior commercial roles in Shell UK. She was appointed in 1993 as Deputy Director General of the Engineering Employers’ Federation and thereafter she was appointed Group Human Resources Director at Smiths Group plc in 1998 . During her career she has campaigned for flexible working, equal pay and female board representation.  She is a former chairman of the Institute of Employment Studies and the Engineering Development Trust. She is currently a non-executive director on the boards of Shire plc and Tate and Lyle plc. Anne has been Patron of the Alumni Fund since 1999.


Mr David Paton OBE

Mr Paton is by profession a chartered surveyor and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and owns the Grandhome estate, which has been in the Paton family since the 1673.

 


Dr Ronald Scott BrownRonald Scott Brown

Dr Scott Brown was one of the founders of the investment management services group Aberdeen Asset Management PLC and was its Chairman from 1989 to 1991. He was also a Director of a number of Investment Trusts and Chairman of two of them prior to his retirement. A graduate of the University of Aberdeen and a qualified solicitor, Dr Scott Brown was for a number of years course leader for one of the topics in the Diploma in Legal Practice. He also served as a lay member of the University Court and Chancellor's Assessor.


Professor John SimpsonJohn Simpson

Professor Simpson graduated in medicine and completed his PhD at the University of Aberdeen. Clinically, he was a consultant histopathologist with particular expertise in renal disease. He was head of the Department of Pathology and also Medical Education Dean in Aberdeen prior to his retirement. He pioneered a series of developments in undergraduate medical education and the MBChB curriculum, amongst which were the establishment of clinical and communication skills teaching and e-learning to support teaching and learning. Professor Simpson has also held a variety of national and international roles in medical education, including leading “The Scottish Doctor” initiative for the five Scottish medical schools and chairing the Academic Council of the International Medical University in Malaysia.


Mr Ronald WadsworthRonald Wadsworth

Ronald Wadsworth graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1968 with a degree in Law. He has worked as a commercial and private client solicitor. He currently serves as a consultant to Ledingham Chalmers, Aberdeen.  He was formerly a partner of local firm Stronachs and has wide experience of advising a range of local enterprises and private clients.  He is the Secretary and treasurer of the Charles Murray Memorial Fund; a fund that was set up to celebrate the work of the author and poet Charles Murray after his death.
