Student Experience

The University is committed to enhancing the student experience for current and future generations of students.

Your gift can support various areas which directly effect and enhance the student experience, such as:

TAU Racing

For the past three years a team of engineering students has received support from the Fund and other donors, enabling them to take part in an annual student competition to design and build a single seat formula car.

“The International Formula Student competition is a fantastic opportunity for engineering students from across academic years to work together and apply the knowledge to a real life scenario. The competition is a real test for us all as individuals, equipping us with attributes which will be beneficial in our future career paths.”

Daniel Ahrens, Project Manager, 2010

AbFab Society

The AbFab Society was awarded funding for their annual charity ceilidh ‘The Gaylidh’ a night consisting of a nice formal meal, great company, a fantastic ceilidh and a good cause. Over 200 students attended, and the event raised a total of £2,000. This money was donated to The Kaleidoscope Foundation, a charity which helps to support LGBT people seeking asylum in countries where it is still illegal to be gay.

Aberdeen Law Project

The Aberdeen Law Project provides legal assistance to people in the community that would otherwise be unable to seek or defend legal adjudication. This is achieved through students, supervised by practitioners, providing members of the public with legal advice and otherwise assisting in pursuing their case. The Aberdeen Law Project was awarded £750 to cover the cost of the group's annual indemnity insurance.

Au Science Magazine

Au Science Magazine is a renowned student publication which has been featured on the Scientific American Blog. Last year, £5000 was given to produce three issues of the magazine and purchase two audio recording devices.

BookEnds

BookEnds is a second-hand bookshop run by student volunteers in Butchart, where students can sell and buy their old books. One-third of the sales is contributed to the Student Charities Campaign. BookEnds received funding to develop their presence across campus through the production of new marketing materials and to help with new events focussed on student engagement. The funding was also used to purchase additional shelving to expand the product range and sell more books to and for students.

"If I were to meet the donors who provided the funding I would be sure to let them know that not only have they been able to help increase monies raised for the 38 local charities supported by the Aberdeen students Charities Campaign, but they have also helped provide more students with volunteering opportunities, help more students find the relevant course texts cheaply and indeed help even more raise cash for themselves by selling their old books. The benefits of this funding are countless."

Sean O'Rourke, President for Charities 2011-2012

Aberdeen University Students' Association

£10,000 was donated to AUSA to assist in supporting their 117 student clubs and societies with the necessary funding to hold events.
