Studying German

Information for Undergraduates

The Department of German offers undergraduate tuition leading to the degree of MA. Comprehensive course details are available in the university course catalogue

Introduction

The German Department provides courses dealing with social, historical and cultural aspects of the German-speaking countries. We place great emphasis on the development of practical language skills, and our teaching programme takes account of new approaches to language teaching, including regular work in the Language Centre, television and satellite broadcasts, videos, films and computer learning (CALL).

Students take the equivalent of three subjects in their first year and two in their second year, usually followed by a two-year Honours course.

Honours possibilities

German is offered as a Single Honours degree or it can be combined in a Joint or Combined Honours degree with any one of the following:

German may also be studied as part of the Designated Degree programme in Three European Languages with Twentieth Century Culture.

All Honours courses are taught as modules. The breadth of choice available enables students to concentrate on the areas in which they are primarily interested. They include literary as well as non-literary studies, e.g. German Classicism, Romanticism, The Modern German Novel, 20th Century Drama, Austrian Literature, Exile Literature, Women's Writings, Film Studies, The Third Reich, 20th German History, Linguistics and The Theory and Practice of Translation, among others.

Level 1 and 2 courses

The academic year at Aberdeen University consists of two half sessions of twelve teaching weeks each.

German for Beginners

This course provides an intensive introduction to the German language for students with no previous knowledge of German or with qualifications beneath Higher or A-Level standard. It concentrates on grammar and vocabulary, and the acquisition of the four basic language skills of speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. Students attend language classes, a reinforcement tutorial conducted in German. They are also required to pursue an intensive course of private study in the Language Centre and to submit regular written work. This course may be taken alone or in combination with a course providing an introduction to social, political and cultural aspects of the German-speaking countries. Students who successfully complete this course may proceed to Level 2 courses and thereafter to Single or Joint Honours.

German language

Levels 1 and 2 courses consist of language classes leading to advanced communicative competence in German and it will include the analysis of contemporary texts drawn from a variety of contexts. The intention of the course is to extend and reinforce students' command of German grammar, vocabulary and syntactic structures, and to introduce various styles of written and spoken German. The teaching is in both English and German.

Modern German Culture

Levels 1 and 2 courses concentrate on the study of selected aspects of modern German culture, involving the close analysis of modern German texts, together with lectures introducing students to the social, political and cultural context in which the texts were written. The aim of the course is to develop students' vocabulary and knowledge of German and their stylistic awareness, to provide students with the ability to analyse literary works, including film adaptations, and to apply all these skills to the study of modern texts selected for their literary importance and relevance to modern German society.

Careers

Aberdeen language graduates have an excellent employment record in a great variety of occupations as teachers, interpreters, translators, librarians, import and export managers and accountants. They also work in banking, insurance, tourism, publishing and advertising and the civil service. Quite a number of the Department's graduates have challenging and well-paid jobs with the EU or with firms in Europe.

Residence abroad

Students may spend their year abroad in a variety of ways: either as teaching assistants at a German or Austrian school, in a work placement arranged by the department, by participating in the Socrates or other exchange scheme with German, Swiss or Austrian universities (including, among others, Zürich, Vienna, Hannover and Kiel), or by making their own arrangement to work and study in a German town or city. For further details go to our Year Abroad Page.

The German Club

The German Club is open to all students of the Department and all other students interested in German and the German-speaking countries. It regularly organises dramatic performances and other events with a German flavour, e.g. Kaffee und Kuchen and Stammtisch get-togethers, film and video showings and lectures and readings by visiting German-speaking guest lecturers and writers. The German Club also provides additional opportunities to meet students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland who are studying at Aberdeen University.
