The Department of German provides supervision for research leading to the degrees of M Litt and PhD, within a thriving research atmosphere at both School and College level. Research students are generally offered the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching in the Department. An induction course on undertaking research in the Humanities is held at the beginning of each academic year. Several recent postgraduate students have received SAAS and other competitive awards.
Recent postgraduates have worked on theses on contemporary German politics and contemporary German literature, completing theses on varied topics, including the theory and practice of translation, Goethe and Diderot, and policing in the EU. Members of the Department are also involved in the new M. Litt programme in Visual Culture.

First of all you will need some idea of your area of research. In all applications a 300 word research plan is, though not absolutely necessary, very welcome: ideally this should indicate what you want to study, and why it's worth doing. It may be worth communicating (by letter, phone or email) with the member of staff whose research interests correspond to yours, and discussing your research interests. This can lead to a much sharper sense of direction. All applications (except those from Aberdeen finalists) require two references. These should be two academics familiar with your work. It can speed up the processing of your application if you get your referees to write directly to the postgraduate officer (address supplied below). When you fill out an application form (if you don't already have one, order one by one of the means detailed below), please give as much contact information as possible - telephone numbers and email addresses can be useful. There is no definite closing date for applications but early applications are encouraged.

There are a number of awards available to students from overseas who wish to take higher degrees in Britain. Information about these can be obtained from your nearest British Council Office, or Commonwealth Scholarship Agency. Applicants from overseas who have been offered a place for study will automatically be sent an application form for the ORS awards scheme, which covers the difference in cost between the tuition fees for home and international students.
The University's International Office assists and welcomes overseas students. Do contact them for information and advice on studying in Aberdeen, including help in finding accommodation. They offer a number of useful booklets, including the 'International Students Handbook':
