"Location Privacy: Producers, collectors, consumers & the mediating power of trust"

Rapid adoption of smartphones, and their associated location-sensing apps, provides scope for widespread, efficient collection of detailed location data. This availability of this information has the potential to confer significant benefits to transport service providers as we become better able to monitor the travel habits and behaviours of the populations being served, and tailor services to better address their needs. The quality and comprehensiveness of such data, however, depend in large part on the attitudes of consumers towards data collecting applications, their trust in the application developers and data users, and their practices relative to these applications in the context of their personal use. In this presentation, I describe an exploration of some of these issues using stated preference and self-reported behaviour surveys of US-based smartphone users in order to generate an understanding of underlying issues that may impact the quality and quantity of data collected through these technologies.
