Fault zones – architecture, processes and styles

Field Workshop on the classic fault exposures, around northern Scotland
  • 10-13 September 2012
Summary

This field course aims to introduce and develop key aspects of the structural geology of fault zones using spectacular outcrops on the margins of the the sedimentary basins of northern Scotland. Using a series of bespoke exercises, together we examine the architecture of faults and related structural damage in a variety of rock types and stratigraphic units. A range of extensional and contractional structures are studies in the following stratigraphic settings: Permian aeolian sandstones; Devonian fluvial and lacustrine sediments; Cambro-Ordovician quartz sandstones and carbonates; Lewisian gneissic basement; and Mesozoic sandstones. The field examples inspire discussions on fault zone properties and the implications for fluid flow in structurally-complex reservoirs.
