Press release for ’Lab on a Chip’ article (March 2010)
How can the oil boom be over when most of the oil is left behind? One of the peculiarities of oil production is that an oil field can easily cease being economical when only a small fraction of its content has been produced. The physical effect behind this phenomenon is beautifully illustrated in videos of experiments performed by researchers at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Glasgow. More info
5th EAGE European Student Lecture (March 2010)
On 2nd March, the 5th official EAGE European Student Lecture took place in Meston. This year's topic was "What Energy Future after the World Oil Production Peak?" and was delivered by Jean-Marie Esperne now retired but previously of Mobil
Visit by Mike Bowman (Dec 2009)
Mike Bowman, Vice President Geoscience & Subsurface Description at BP Exploration visited the department on Tuesday 8 December. As well as presenting a lecture titled "Access & Exploration to Hydrocarbon Production Start-up: Opportunities, Challenges & the role of New Technology", he talked to the MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience class about the Gulf of Mexico Hydrocarbon Province and the Challenge of Deepwater & Subsalt over lunch and with many members of the department on matters relating to exploHUB, Virtual Seismic Atlas, Deepwater Structures, Carbonates, Geochemistry labs and Faults, fractures and borehole geomechanics.
School PGR poster exhibition (Oct 2009)
The 2009 School of Geosciences PGR poster exhibition was held on Wednesday 28th October in St Mary’s. There were 29 posters displayed demonstrating the vibrancy and breadth of ongoing PGR research across all disciplines of the School. Congratulations go to Leszek Gardela, who has just started the second year of a PhD in Archaeology, who won the best poster competition.
