Technical Facilities
Laboratories
The department has the following laboratory facilities and equipment:-
- Geochemistry lab: Mineral separation, rock digestion and rock extract analyses. Equipment includes 2 GC., 3 GC/MS, C&S analyser, HPLC and Particle Size Analyser.
- Petrophysics lab: Porosity/permeability measurements using a Jones permeameter.
- Sections suite: Rock cutting, crushing and polished block/slide preparations.
- Clean sedimentary Lab: Mineral separation and pre-treatment of rocks for analysis. Sieving is now carried out in St Marys.
- Optics lab: Microscopes with point counters and cameras attached.
- SEM: Scanning Electron Microscopy (using an ISI ABT-55) of rock samples both for research and teaching.
- Microprobe: 3 Microprobes used in quantitative analyses of rock samples.
- Palynology lab: Acid digestion research lab. for preparation of microfossils.
- Microscopes: For class use.

IT Facilities
- Research Workstation room providing access to PCs running Earthwave, ArcGis, Kingdom, Winlog, graphics software, scanners, A3 digitising tablet and Sun workstations running Openworks software and Rock Solid Attributes under Unix.
- Licenses for Kingdom, Earthwave, Hampson Russell (Strata, Geoview), Openworks, Rokdoc, Geoprobe, Opendtect, Petrel, Winlog, Tesseral, Rock Solid Attributes, Oilfield Data Manager (Senergy), Move 2009 (Midland Valley) and SVI Pro (ffA).

- A3 printer & scanner
- Multiple slide scanner
- Dedicated PGT classrooms with PCs, scanners and printers
