Master of Research in Human Geography

The ESRC accredited Master of Research is designed primarily to prepare students for a research degree in Human Geography. For further details please contact the Programme Director, Dr Lorna Philip, or the Research Secretary, Nadine Hardie.

PhD Research

Enquiries from potential doctoral students are warmly welcomed, particularly for research that fits into our main research themes. These are Development and Policy (with the sub-groups of Rural and Regional Development, and Humans, Landscapes and Environments) and Environmental Processes and Change (which includes the sub-groups environmental change, environmental processes and environmental hydrology).  Some students are supervised jointly with partner organisations including, for example, the Macaulay Institute, the Scottish Agricultural College, the Centre for Transport Policy and the Northern Studies Centre.

There are around 40 full and part-time students completing a research degree in Geography & Environment. Their research interests reflect the two broad research themes within which our academic staff work.  Those interested in registering for a research degree (MSc by research, MPhil or PhD) are encouraged to review the research theme pages, including individual academic staff and postgraduate research student pages, to find out more about the research being undertaken.

We hold accreditation from the ESRC for 1+3, +3 and CASE studentships. Other funding opportunities include NERC, the Carnegie Trust and ORS awards.

For further information on PhD opportunities please contact the Doctoral Programme Director, Dr Lorna Philip, or the Research Secretary, Nadine Hardie.
