School of Geosciences - Geography and Environment

Geography & Environment is located in the St Mary's building on the Old Aberdeen campus. We offer a wide range of Degree Programmes: MA and BSc in Geography; Marine & Coastal Resource Management; and a range of Spatial Planning and Surveying programmes. Aberdeen is one of the best places in Britain for the study of Geography, Land and Resource Management and in particular offers excellent opportunities for fieldwork. It is within easy reach of diverse mountain, lowland and coastal environments, and offers contrasts between the cosmopolitan urban environment of Europe's oil capital and rural areas with more traditional lifestyles.
Geography & Environment has an excellent reputation for teaching and learning. The 'Subject Review', carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in 2002, gave it the highest possible rating in all the review categories. And the Education Guardian rated it highest for Geography in Scotland, and one of the top in the UK. Its teaching and learning are informed by a lively research culture, rated 4 in the Research Assessment Exercise of 2001.
A feature of teaching at Aberdeen is its flexibility. During your first year as an undergraduate, for example, you could select a curriculum that would allow you to proceed to an honours degree in a number of subjects. Within Geography, you have ample opportunity to specialise in areas of particular interest. Students following Planning, Rural Surveying and the MCRM receive professional accreditation from the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, opening up a wide range of career opportunities. And the QAA found that "Employment statistics are excellent for both undergraduates and postgraduates".
Aberdeen's combination of the quality of our teaching, the richness of opportunities offered by the setting and the flexibility of our degree programmes is unique. It is an excellent choice at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
