Description

The doctoral candidate will be supervised by a team from Social Science and Computer Science. The doctorate is fully funded for 3.5 years and the candidate will be expected to have a good first degree or masters-level qualification in a relevant discipline (business, sociology, public policy, political science, anthropology etc.) coupled with a predisposition to learn new technological skills.

The doctoral project will be linked to the CURIOS project (part of the dot.rural research project),Digital Economy Hub) which is working with community groups to develop cultural repositories of linked information that can be accessed by different user groups in an “intelligent” way. At present this is looking at material collected by historical societies about their own communities, but it will also be extended to other kinds of historical and cultural material that is collated and catalogued in different forms. The doctoral studentship could focus upon one or other of these sources of information that comprise cultural repositories or upon one or other of the relevant community groups and public institutions that are using them.

Another aspect of this project is the way in which digitising local resources can help to transform local communities making them more inclusive with a greater sense of regional identity and with greater business opportunities.

The doctoral proposal should focus on some aspect of this work, perhaps with reference to a particular local community or organisation.

Tuition fees (Home/EU rate) currently £9,500 per annum, will be paid. The studentship is funded by dot.rural, which is supported by the RCUK Digital Economy Programme (http://www.rcukdigitaleconomy.org.uk/). The studentship is funded at this level for 3.5yrs.
