Fairtrade Group

The University of Aberdeen's Fairtrade & Sustainable Procurement Steering Group  - initially set up as a Fairtrade Steering Group - was established in November 2005.

It was established to guide the University towards Fairtrade status, subsequently achieving this accolade in April 2007.

Since 2011 accreditation renewal is to be done every two years through the submission of documentary evidence of ongoing commitment, support and promotion of Fairtrade.

Since its initial development the group has seen a number of members come and go, but is currently represented by the following staff and students:

Calum Maclachlan - General Manager, Campus Services (Convener)

Gary Mackinnon - Procurement Manager, Finance (Member)

Mike Tyers - Finance Manager, Campus Services (Member)
Having for many years been greatly interested in Organic & Biodynamic systems of production, where small-scale producers make quality items in harmony with the environment, it is gratifying that Fairtrade producers are being recognised by consumers for following the same principles & producing improving quality of items for sale as a viable option.  My favourite item is Indian Ocean Teabags - mixed in a cup with some hot water straight off the boil!

Amy Gray - Waste and Environmental Manager, Estates (Member)
My role on the group has changed over the years from developing marketing ideas, to producing them, and ensuring the University raises the profile of Fairtrade as part of its move towards Corporate Social Responsibility. Though Derek may say that my role is to give him more work to do! My favourite Fairtrade product has to be Crazy Jack basmati rice. Not only does it have a great product name, but its a staple food product that can greatly benefit from its Fairtrade status....I also like a lot of curry!

Fraser Lovie - Policy Adviser, Planning Policy and Governance (Member)
As the University's Policy Adviser looking at Sustainability and Social Responsibility, I see our commitment to Fairtrade as one of the most important outlets for institutional commitment to both social justice and ethical purchasing. It is also an important contribution to the Scottish Fair Trade Forum's campaign to achieve Fair Trade nation status for Scotland and as such I'm a firm advocate of doing all we can to assist other Universities and colleges to achieve Fairtrade status. My favourite Fairtrade product is Divine milk chocolate.

Sue Good - Third World Centre (External Member)
I work for the local fair trade shop, the Third World Centre and also co-ordinate the Aberdeen City Fairtrade campaign, so I sit on the steering group to provide the link between town and gown. I'd be hard pushed to say what my favourite Fairtrade product is, but I can recommend the wine, the roses and the honey.

Tessa Birley - President, Aberdeen University Students Association (Student Member)

Gordon Maloney - Environment & Ethics Officer, AUSA (Student Member)

Kathleen Thomson - Campus Services (Clerk)
I clerk the University’s Fairtrade Steering Group and was responsible for submitting the University’s application for Fairtrade Status to the Fairtrade Foundation. I like Geobars but I love Divine white chocolate!
