Aberdeen China Film Club, as part of the Confucius Institute Aberdeen, is proud to present its Confucius Day Chinese Film Festival line-up for 2016. Films are in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) with English subtitles and will run over five consecutive weeks, usually on a Friday night (specific dates, times and movies are below), with two afternoon showings especially for our younger film buffs.

All showings in the festival will be based in the Aberdeen Confucius Institute (17 High Street), are free of charge and  will include fresh popcorn. Everybody is welcome!

 

Friday September 30th 2016, 7pmSpring in a Small Town (1948) (小城之春)

A lonely housewife finds her monotonous life altered when her childhood sweetheart returns to town. 

Friday October 7th 2016, 7pmBig Boss (1971) (Bruce Lee, 唐山大兄) 

A young man sworn to an oath of non-violence works with his cousins in an ice factory where they mysteriously begin to disappear. 

Friday October 14th, 2016, 2pm - Children's ShowingMulan (1998) 花木蘭

To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.

Friday October 14th 2016, 7pmThe Chinese Feast (1995) (满汉全席)

Kit is a gangster looking to start a new life as a chef in Canada, so he can be closer to his girlfriend. But in his struggle to learn the fine art of cuisine, he runs across a red-headed beauty who will change his plans, and soon finds himself off in search of the retired master who can teach him how to win in the ultimate cooking challenge. 

Friday October 21st 2016, 2pm - Children's ShowingShaolin Soccer (2001) 少林足球

A young Shaolin follower reunites with his discouraged brothers to form a soccer team using their martial art skills to their advantage.

Friday October 21st 2016, 7pmRed Sorghum (1987) 紅高粱

In 1930s China a young woman is sent by her father to marry the leprous owner of a winery. In the nearby red sorghum fields she falls for one of his servants. When the master dies she finds herself inheriting the isolated business.

Friday October 28th 2016, 7pmFarewell, My Concubine (1993)(霸王别姬)

The story of two men, who met as apprentices in the Peking Opera, and stayed friends for over 50 years.
