Researchers at the University of Aberdeen invite you to participate in a one-day artistic event putting art theory into practice and vice versa.

"Perform. Play. Art" will consist of talks by artists and arts practitioners from the former Yugoslavia, a participatory performance by artists from Slovenia, in which attendees in Aberdeen can be involved, and a public performance by artists from Scotland and Slovenia, linked up with Aberdeen via Skype.

The field of art emphasises experimentation as well as the strong need for theorizing itself, questioning the techniques and the technology used and the context in which the art is produced. By doing so, art has undergone continuous changes of practices, styles, notions, positions and topics. It tried to detect and react towards the everyday, pinpointing the invisible yet present materiality. With questioning authorship, contempt and resistance of high art and through the process of institutionalization, performative, ephemeral and collective processes are emphasized. The forms and formats of expression should not be dictated by the authority. Creativity should be continuously on the search for its own means and therefore experimentation should become an indispensible part of art, with the aim of testing out our own abilities, our own sensations and to be prepared for the journey into the unknown. The art that does not repeat itself, but rather searches, was for this reason always the most precious—it managed to cross the pre-given boundaries and enrich its audience with a different experience.

This event, “Perform. Play. Art” bridges the significance of performance art in the past with the one produced today, emphasising social, political and economic changes. It will provide glimpses into two countries, the former Yugoslavia and Scotland, pointing out connections, relations and the exchange of the artists’ creative potentiality.
