This is a past event

Nineteenth century architectural thinkers took for granted that there was a relation between the materials of which buildings were built and the locality in which they stood. In the twentieth century, that relationship was dissolved by the development of supposedly 'universal' materials - steel, concrete, plasterboard - but no new theory of materials has been evolved to take account of these altered conditions, where materials are no longer tied to place. What does this mean for us today?

In the YEAR OF INNOVATION, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN 2016 We are delighted to welcome Professor Adrian Forty to deliver an evening talk ‘On Nations and Materials'.Adrian Forty is Professor Emeritus of Architectural History at the Bartlett School of Architecture. He is the author of Objects of Desire (1986); Words and Buildings, a Vocabulary of Modern Architecture (2000); and Concrete and Culture, a Material History (2012).
