Roger Taylor, the internationally renowned historian of mid-19th century British photography, joins independent documentary and fine art photographer John Perivolaris in an informal discussion about George Washington Wilson and contemporary photographic views of the city.

Roger Taylor is an internationally acclaimed expert on mid-19th Century photography and author of many books on the subject of Victorian photography. He recently contributed his expertise to the National Museum of Scotland's Victorian Sensation exhibition. For almost 60 years photography has been the centre of Roger's working life; as a practitioner, teacher, curator and academic. His career began as apprentice to a leading Manchester commercial and industrial photographer. After 18 years' teaching at Sheffield Polytechnic, Roger was appointed the National Museum of Photography's Senior Curator of Photography. From 1995 he has been an independent curator creating exhibitions for leading museums.

John Perivolaris is an independent documentary and fine art photographer with particular interests in migration, refugee experience, diaspora, memory and peripheral urban spaces.

“Much of my work has been concerned with the documentation of urban space and the biographical documentation of migratory experience. Often collaborative, my projects use photography, text, and sound to reflect on how we experience cities. My photographs invite reflection on our attachment to places and objects, and the refraction of time through memory.

I have always been drawn to the materiality of photography as a medium. Its inherent stillness and silence invites us to linger on the surfaces of people and places, and the transformative effects of light. Silence and stillness also lead both photographer and viewer to turn their gaze inwards to their memories and dreams. In this way, photography can become a form of attentive reflection – establishing a dialogue between what was captured by the camera and the sensibilities of the viewer. Dialogue is at the core of my working practice and motivates the collaborative processes that define much of my work. Photography allows me to be open to ways of viewing the world other than my own. My dialogue with George Washington Wilson has allowed me the privilege of reflecting on the history of Aberdeen by walking in that pioneer photographer’s footsteps.”
