A new series of café scientifique style talks at the MacRobert Hall in Tarland.

CAFÉ SCIENTIFIQUE TALKS AND SCIENCE ACTIVITIES

Start time is 7.30pm unless indicated otherwise. Adults £4, under 18s and family events free.

18th November - MOUNTAIN BIKING - INNOVATING TO SUCCESS (NB: Start time 7.00 pm) : Graeme McLean, of Scottish Cycling , will be explaining how innovations in Scottish mountain biking are placing Scotland at the leading edge of bike developments across the world.

16th December - ALL YOU NEED IS SPACEJoin Professor Dame Anne Glover, past Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission for an inspirational talk about some of the pioneering work in space science being spearheaded by the European Space Agency (ESA). A timely talk as British and ESA astronaut Tim Peake will have left earth behind for his adventure to the International Space Station just 24 hours before.

CANCELLED 6th January - FAT MATTERSDr. Alex Johnstone, the Rowett Institute for Nutrition and Health, the University of Aberdeen will be exploring the myths and reality of weight loss. This is a Future Group special to give post-Christmas dieters the opportunity to talk to an expert on the subject.

20th January - THE FUTURE OF CANCER MEDICINEDr. Elaina Collie-Duguid, The Institute of Medical Sciences, the University of Aberdeen. This talk will explain how modern genomics is shaping the future of cancer medicine by defining tumours according to their genetic makeup and tailoring specific treatments to match.

17th February - VIEWING THE NIGHT SKYNeville Browne of the Aberdeen Astronomical Society, will explain how to get started : choosing a telescope, setting it up and how to line it up on something interesting. The talk will be followed by a local observation session on another date chosen to ensure a suitably clear night.

16th March - SPARKS IN TARLANDDr. Ken Skeldon, Head of Public Engagement with Research at the University of Aberdeen will be demonstrating rarely seen experiments from the world of electricity. The lecture will include the exhibition of Scotland’s largest high-voltage musical Tesla Coil. An unforgettable experience – notto be missed. (Age 7+)

6th April - THE K’NEX ENGINEERING CHALLENGE WORKSHOPPlease note this event will start at 2.30pm.Hands-on family workshop run by Satrosphere. Workshops have a limited number of places allocated on a first come, first served basis.

13th April - DESTINATION SPACE : JOIN THE CREWPlease note this event will start at 11.30am.Satrosphere family science show. 

13th April - THE ROBOT CHALLENGE WORKSHOPPlease note this event will start at 2.30pm.Hands-on family workshop run by Satrosphere. Workshops have a limited number of places allocated on a first come, first served basis.

20th April - HARMFUL MEDICINEPast medical treatments often caused considerable harm but well-meaning doctors continued to prescribe these treatments. Dr. Michael De Barra from the Health Services Research Unit at the University of Aberdeen will explore some of the psychological and biological processes that make it so so difficult to recognise the benefits or harms of medical treatments.

4th May - COLLECTIVE ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR From swirling starling flocks to sheep grazing, animals have some remarkable abilitiesto coordinate their group activity. Dr. Francesco Ginelli from the Department of Physics at the University of Aberdeen will be explaining how and discuss why they do it.

Cromar Future Group are a Tarland based group working with the University of Aberdeen and Satrosphere to bring science and technology talks and activities locally. These are open to all who would like to attend. Older children and teenagers are welcome at talks as well as the family events, but all children must be accompanied by an adult. Talks follow the relaxed Café Scientifique format : Introduction, talk, coffee break, Q&A session. Putting the Café into our Café Scientifique talks are Caroldson’s baristas - so come early and enjoy their excellent coffee and cakes.
