To round off the 'Germans in Britain' exhibition, there will be two German-themed talks in the Event Space of the Sir Duncan Rice Library on Wednesday 23rd September, 1-2pm.

Professor Karin Friedrich will be presenting an overview of the long history of German-British contacts at Aberdeen, a city closely connected for centuries through the Hanseatic League with continent across the North Sea and the Baltic. Professor Thomas Weber, Chair in History and International Affairs at Aberdeen University will be talking more specifically about the fascinating story of Fritz Wiedemann.

“Aberdeen has recently become a magnet again for migrants particularly from Poland and the Baltic countries. Historical migration from continental Europe, including the German lands, to Britain has been overshadowed by the two world wars in the twentieth century. I welcome the opportunity to refresh our memory that such migration and close British-Scottish-German contacts go back for centuries and were entirely harmonious and beneficial to each other’s societies and economies. The exhibition gives us a taste of this long history.”
