Come to discuss with us whether sports would be better off if they were completely gender blind.
Café Philosophique offers and informal way to engage with the latest topics in philosophy. It is normal to ring-fence sport competitions by gender: there is a football World Cup for men’s teams, and one for women’s teams; a Wimbledon tennis championship for ladies and one for men, a British Open for male golfers and one for ladies, and so on. This is true across most sports.
But is this segregation of sports by gender fair? Is a ban on women competing in men’s competitions a form of gender discrimination? What about a ban on men competing in women’s competitions? Would sports be better off if they were completely gender-blind?
