Exploring identity and culture in the workplace, specifically focusing on the development of professional culture in Engineering and Marketing environments.

Join us as we discuss issues surrounding identity and culture in the workplace, specifically focusing on the development of culture in Engineering and Marketing environments. By investigating the interactions between early-career workers and their peers, we are able to provide a valuable insight into the use of language as a tool in the workplace, how it is being used to affirm identities and hierarchies, and why what we say, may not always be what we mean.

We will also take a look into the role of women in engineering cultures and discuss how their interactions are providing a much-needed insight and understanding of some of the experiences that female engineers face in the workplace and the major role communications has in cultures dominated by one gender.

The data for this study consists of authentic recordings of novice professional meetings in engineering and marketing contexts and provides a rare view of the development of codes of practice over a prolonged period of time.
