Find out about the fascinating history of Bennachie on Wednesday 14th October.

The Bennachie Landscapes Project began in 2009 as a way to encourage research about the hill and surrounding area. Speakers Jeff Oliver, Sue Taylor, Jo Vergunst and Ken Ledingham will be giving an insight into their areas of research and answering your questions about the Bennachie Landscapes Project.

A display of panels telling the story of "the hill" goes on display in the Library foyer from 9th October. The display The Sir Duncan Rice Library highlights various strands of the work of the Project over the last few years. Find out more about the people that colonised the hill from the early 1800s: the dykers, the fish cadgers, quarriers and stocking knitters. Read the tragic story of the eviction of Alexander Littlejohn and his family and other tales pieced together by the project’s researchers from archaeological finds. Learn also how the hill itself has changed over 7000 years and how its flora and fauna have coped with human intervention.

At the public talk on Wednesday 14th October Jeff Oliver, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen will be uncovering revelations from the colony excavations whilst Ken Ledingham discusses his new findings about the tenants of Bennachie. Jo Vergunst will explain how his experience on the hill compares with other community based projects across the UK and Sue Taylor, an expert in the history of ceramics, will reveal what the shards of pottery found at Bennachie say about the colonists that used them.
