Flight to Extinction

Flight to Extinction
-

This is a past event

100 years ago the world's most abundant bird disappeared forever.

The Passenger Pigeon of North America was once the world’s most abundant bird.   It is estimated the population of Passenger Pigeons numbered about 3.5 billion birds, but heavy exploitation and habitat loss by the late 19thc resulted in a sudden population crash from which the bird never recovered.  By 1900 there were no more Passenger Pigeons left in the wild.  The extinction of the Passenger Pigeon has many lessons to teach us even 100 years later.  It is a testament to the power of humanity to devastate seemingly abundant resources.

The Aberdeen Branch of the RSPB group are holding a lecture by Mark Avery on the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon in the Zoology Building on 14th October, more information can be found here.

The display is held in the upper gallery of the Zoology Museum. The Zoology Museum is open Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm. Entry is free.
