From Deep Space to Deep Sea: The Technologies Revolutionising Biological and Medical Imaging

Interactive lecture exploring the complex world of single living cells

In our research we use light emitting molecules from coral and jellyfish to study the intricate behaviour of the complex world of single living cells.  In this accessible, interactive lecture we will explore this work, covering the concept of scale in biological processes, the history of microscopy, natural bioluminescence and fluorescence, microscopy limitations and how the next generation of technologies beat these limitations. A parallel between astronomy and biology underlies the talk and examples of interactions between these fields are used to highlight modern progress in the field. The lecture is interactive, and audience participation and real time examples will allow visitors to engage with the broad range of science presented.
