Bring all the family to Satrosphere for a fantastic evening!

As part of a city-wide EXPLORATHON you’re invited to bring the whole family to Satrosphere Science Centre for a one-night line-up of exciting shows, hands-on fun, educational activities and stand up science! Admission is FREE, just turn up.

If the discovery becomes too much, you can relax in the Satrosphere café and indulge in our FREE European-themed pizza buffet where there’s even a chance to win a prize for the most inventive pizza of the night!

 

IN THE SHOW THEATRE

18:15 & 18:45 Happy Food (suitable for all ages)The Kilted Chef Craig Wilson from Eat on the Green Restaurant in Udny, Aberdeenshire will join Dr Alexandra Johnstone from the University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health for a fun family event chatting about the role of food in health and how it can be enjoyable to eat healthy, whilst flipping pancakes to fill with fresh ingredients for both sweet and savoury tastes.

19:30 Satrosphere presents “How to make the perfect burger”30 minute interactive show, suitable for all agesExplore the science behind what makes a perfect burger; is it the meat, the bun,or the relishes? Be dazzled by this mouthwatering sizzling science.

20:30 Satrosphere presents “10 Ways to Explain the Universe in your Kitchen”30 minute interactive show, suitable for ages 5 and upCome on an exciting journey through the wonders of science, using everyday objects you can easily lay hands on! From vaccines to black holes, electricity to anatomy – simple but lively demonstrations you can try for yourself await!

21:30 Visual Creativity: Why imagining something is not the same as seeing itDr David Pearson, University of Aberdeen, suitable for ages 8 and up

Our imagination appears to be limitless, but is it really? This talk will discuss research on visual creativity, & why in some cases our “mind’s eye” can fail us

Join Dr John Baird and his colleagues from the University of Aberdeen for a walk on the wild side his incredible insect lab! Meet Sir Legs-a-lot the Millipede, stick insects, & bugs from the amazon & much more as we delve into the science of insects, parasites, and more.

Join astrophysicist James Reid for an out of this world look at the night’s sky in the science centre’s planetarium and find out what to look out for in the coming months.

20:00 When will you hear me? Asynchronous communication on the Mars MissionProfessor Rhona Flin, University of Aberdeen, suitable for 8 years & up

On a long duration spaceflight like travelling to Mars, astronauts will be a long way from Earth causing a huge delay between sending & receiving information. On a Mars mission this delay could be as much as 22 mins one way (& 44 mins to get a reply). This out of synch communication may have major implications on crew behaviour. Take a look at Rhona’s recent work for NASA on communication with crews in deep space.
