Conducted by David J. Smith and Christopher Gray.
King's College Chapel Choir and the University Choral Society bring together a programme celebrating the choral works of Benjamin Britten, his friends and influences.

Benjamin Britten’s music is steeped in the English music of his forebears, and particularly their vocal music. Britten demonstrates an undeniable mastery in the setting of English texts, composing 14 operas as well as choral works, pieces for solo voice and accompaniment, and settings of English folksong. In terms of earlier composers, Britten is perhaps most closely associated with Henry Purcell, not least because he took the theme of The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra from the ‘Rondeau’ in Purcell’s Abdelazer

Britten’s interest in music of the past extended beyond Purcell and the seventeenth century, and this concert's programme explores connections with two sixteenth-century composers whose music inspired Britten to write for organ - Tomás Luis de Victoria and Thomas Tallis. Motets by Dr Phillip Cooke (Lecturer in Composition at the University of Aberdeen) and works by Aaron Copland also feature to complete a musical feast in the beautiful surroundings of St Machar's Cathedral.
