A series of film screenings and workshops that will introduce participants to the traditions of handmade, recycled, and found footage cinemas.

Screening 1: Iain Halliwell
Ian Helliwell will present a selection of his works, followed by Q/A. Helliwell is a renowned composer, filmmaker, collagist, instrument builder, installation artist, live performer, radio and film programmer, light show projectionist, teacher and writer. Self-taught and self-funded, he has operated from his headquarters in Brighton since 1991. His work includes over 70 experimental films and the composition of electronic music with instruments he designs and builds himself.

Screening 2: George Barber "Beyond Language" Touring ProgrammeA pioneer of British video art, George Barber was a founding member of ZG Magazine and a leading figure in the Scratch Video phenomenon of the 1980s. Moving away from Scratch in the early ’90s, Barber created many lo-tech video pieces and was influential in defining the then-emergent ‘slacker’ aesthetic. Narrative is at the centre of much of his work, whether deconstructing it as in Scratch, or creating humorous and absurd situations to find existential meaning in the margins of modern life. Beyond Language presents a broad selection of Barber's influential video work from past 30 years from proto-Scratch works of the early ’80s to his recent return to assemblage and appropriation. Workshop 2: Digital Archives and RemixingParticipants will learn to source public domain materials from digital archives and remix these materials using video editing software.
Friday 4 October | 7pm | Auris Lecture Theatre (23 St. Machar Dr.), University of Aberdeen | Free and Open to the Public Screening 3: Spark of Being (Bill Morrison, 2010)Over the past twenty years, Bill Morrison has built a filmography of more than thirty projects that have been presentedin theatres, museums, galleries and concert halls worldwide. His work often makes use of rare archival footage in which forgotten film imagery is reframed as part of our collective mythology. Spark of Being is anadaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein using found film footage, with an original soundtrack by Dave Douglas. This screening marks its Scottish premiere.
