One day CPD event for Micribiology teachers or technicians.
The University of Aberdeen will host a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) event for Microbiology Technicians and Teachers. The course is intended to provide professional development in basic microbiology laboratory work and school microbiology safety. The course is suitable both for complete beginners and staff wishing to brush up their practical microbiology skills. The event will provide participants with ‘hands on’ experience of good microbiological laboratory practice (GMLP) to ensure that school microbiology investigations proceed safely. The laboratory-based practical course is designed for those who have had little experience in this field.
Course Aims
This CPD event will cover all the essential aspects of school microbiology including:
- basic training in the techniques needed to carry out microbiology investigations safely in schools
- preparation and sterilisation of equipment and culture media
- aseptic technique
- maintenance and growth of cultures
- methods of disposal
Programme
09.00 – 09.30 Registration and coffee
09.30 – 10.00 A Brief Introduction to Microbiology
10.00 – 12.30 Lab Session One: Aseptic technique, methods for maintaining, preparing and using cultures, incubation and clearing up
12.30 – 13.15 Lunch
13.15 – 15.30 Lab Session Two: Session 1 results; microscopy and staining techniques
15.30 – 16.00 Microbiology Quiz and Coffee
Fees
The course will cost £105 per person; fees include course notes, a sandwich lunch and refreshments.
