Join us for a celebration of this great achievement of JJR Macleod, an Aberdeen alumnus and distinguished professor, in this the 90th anniversary year of the discovery of insulin.
In 1923, the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was awarded jointly to Dr F Banting and Professor JJR Macleod for this great discovery. Professor Macleod, later the Regius Professor of Physiology at the University of Aberdeen, started his career in medicine as a graduate of Marischal College, University of Aberdeen. This year is the 90th anniversary of this break through medical discovery which has fundamentally changed the lives of diabetics around the world.
To commemorate this monumental medical discovery and the Aberdeen connection, the College of Life Sciences & Medicine is hosting a public lecture. There will be an overview of the science of the discovery, and guest speaker Mr Arthur Ainsberg, author of Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin, and the Making of a Medical Miracle, will discuss the people and the politics behind this historic discovery. A panel discussion on the current state of diabetes treatment and research will follow.
