Fighting for Forgiveness : Former Jacobites and the Global British Empire

Among the many ironic dimensions of Jacobitism, few are more striking than the ways in which many Jacobite families responded to the final military downfall of 1746.

This talk explores the way ex-Jacobites rapidly transferred their military allegiances to the British state in the decade or so after Culloden and how, in a strange twist of fate, they snatchd a victory of sorts from defeat through a process of compulsory and voluntary service to Britain's rapdily emerging global empire.

This event is part of a series of fascinating and engaging activities that accompanies the inaugural exhibition at the new Library at the University of Aberdeen. The exhibition displays treasures from the University's rare book, archive and museum collections to explore and challenge traditional assumptions about the Jacobites.

This event is free of charge, although reservation is advised.
