Cafe Philosophique- Is time travel possible?

This is a past event

If travel into the past is possible, couldn't I travel back in time and prevent my parents from ever meeting? But then it seems I wouldn't be around to travel into the past! Join us to ponder over some of the perplexing philosophical questions that time travel raises.

Dr Stephan Torre will lead the discussion at the second Café Philosophique evening, ‘Is time travel possible?’, from 7pm on Tuesday May 21st at the Blue Lamp pub (121 Gallowgate).

“Time travel raises some really interesting philosophical issues.” said Dr Stephan Torre. “We’ll be talking about whether the very notion of time travel is incoherent, whether you could travel back in time and kill your own grandfather, and some alleged paradoxes of time travel.

Some believe that time travel leads to paradox and could therefore never be possible. But others believe that there is nothing incoherent about time travel, and so it’s possible—at least in principle.”

Café Philosophique is a series of free interactive talks run by the Philosophy Department at the University of Aberdeen along with the Public Engagement with Research Unit.  The events are designed to encourage participants to tackle philosophical topics together with philosophers and other participants. No prior knowledge of Philosophy is required.

Future Café Philosophique topics include Paradoxes (June 11th Blue Lamp, led by Dr Franz Berto) and implicit bias against women in the workplace (June 27th Belmont Cinema, led by Prof Jennifer Saul).
