Scotland, the Highlands and Tartan

This event is part of a series of fascinating and engaging activities that accompanies the inaugural exhibition at the University’s impressive new Library, Rebels with a Cause: The Jacobites and the Global Imagination. The visual legacy of the Jacobites is immense for Scotland. It still lies at the very heart of how Scots promote themselves to others and how they are perceived around the globe.

Soon after the defeat of 1745, Scots who disdained to support his cause while it had a chance of success, eagerly embraced 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' and all his trappings (Highlands, Highlanders, Tartan). They did so for the very good reason that this 'Highlandism' was not English. It was instead a distinctive badge of Scottish uniqueness. The ways in which this development flourished and its consequences for 'Highlandism' are explored in this fascinating talk.
