Three Aberdeen surgeons will give an insight into the challenges faced by the nation, the soldiers and the medics of the First World War.

In 1914, Britain was ill-prepared for a European conflict. After only a few months of war, Britain’s small regular army had all but ceased to exist. The insatiable demand for more fighting bodies meant Territorial Divisions, newly formed Volunteer Divisions and finally conscripts were sent to the frontlines.

Orthopaedic surgeon Tom Scotland will discuss Britain’s general response to the crisis, while general and breast cancer surgeon Steve Heys will examine the particular role played by the University Company of the 4th Gordon Highlanders. Plastic and reconstructive surgeon John Holmes will discuss the war-time development of this surgical speciality.

Join them on this, the 11th day of 11th month, in an act of remembrance on the anniversary of the day the guns fell silent on the Western Front.
