Reclaim the Night

Reclaim the Night
-

This is a past event

Reclaim the Night marches came to the UK in the 1970s to address violence against women after a series of murders of women resulting in a police response that women should not go out at night. This angered feminists and student groups who organised a resistance of torch-lit marches to highlight that they should be able to walk anywhere and that they should not be blamed or restricted because of male violence. Forty years on it is still the case that in every sphere of life women negotiate the threat or reality of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment, equal citizenship cannot be claimed while this threat exists and whilst women do not feel safe in their environment.

Reclaim the Night is the final event of a week long campaign to stop violence against women. The purpose of our event is to change attitudes and raise awareness of violence and harassment and to show a united force, together with the local community, to tackle safety and to promote an inclusive environment where people feel able to express who they are. Traditionally these events have only been open to women to participate in, however, we would like Aberdeen to celebrate this as a liberation event for all therefore including women, men, children and particular groups within our society who may not feel safe within their environment.

We march for women and others who do not feel safe within the environment they live in.We march because women negotiate the threat or reality of rape, sexual assault and harassment in every sphere of their life.We march for student safety. We march to bring together the community to change attitudes and to raise awareness of violence and harassment. We march to show a united force that promotes an inclusive environment within the society which tackles safety at night.

We’re marching, are you?
