Museum Lecture Series Autumn Talk (in association with Friends of the University Library)

Pause for a moment and think about those developments, those "fearsome engines", which have had a fundamental impact on the course of history and civilization: the spinning wheel and the loom; water and windmills; the steam engine; the printing press; and all those inventions that led to the development of agricultural machinery, musical instruments, ships, siege engines, arms and armour. How were they developed and what influenced their development?

The properties, historical development and processing of traditional materials such as timber, stone, metals, fabrics and ceramics, the development of the "engine" and insights into how the historical, social and political context of a period might impact on the change that might be brought about by a particular "engine" will be touched upon in Professor Chandler's talk.

During term-time the Museum hosts lectures on most Tuesday evenings. These include lectures organised by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the Elphinstone Institute, Egyptology Scotland and the Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society. We also host a variety of other events, workshops, lectures and conferences through the year.

Professor Chandler's lecture is to be held in the Regent Building Lecture Theatre and entry is £3 at the door. All welcome, light refreshments will be served after the lecture.
