sound, North East Scotland's festival of new music, opens on Wednesday 20 October. Driven by the passion to make new music more accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds, sound and its network of partner organisations have planned for 2010 yet another journey of musical exploration across Aberdeen city and shire. If you are a student, it’s worth having a close look as most concerts are only £2!

To whet your appetite, here are a few of the events happening on the University campus, and many other events take place in Aberdeen and across the North East.

Regulars at the festival, the Smith Quartet make a welcome return to sound to perform music by Stephen Montague, Gavin Bryars, Michael Gordon alongside Steve Reich’s Different Trains on Friday 22 October in Johnston Hall. The next day on Saturday 23 October, celebrated Scottish percussionist Colin Currie leads a group of the country’s elite percussionists in Reich’s iconic masterpiece Drumming. Still in Johnston Hall on Sunday 31 October composer Sally Beamish and conductor Garry Walker will work with local musicians to rehearse and perform Sally’s work for solo viola, string quartet, harp and strings Rhapsody on Themes from Hafez. Application form available on http://www.sound-scotland.co.uk/

On Saturday 13 November, composer Pete Stollery invites you to visit a theme park of sound with his Electroacoustic Fair. For one whole day, the MacRobert Building will be turned into a hive of interactivity with performances, workshops, demos and sonic “rides” for all ages. Artists include MTI-DMU (De Montfort University), MANTIS (University of Manchester), BEAST (University of Birmingham), Sound Emporium (University of Aberdeen) as well as invisiblEARts composed by Pete Stollery himself, Alistair MacDonald, Nick Virgo, Pippa Murphy and Robert Dow.
