2010 is International Year of the Laser! Learn how this invention without a use has become a staple of industry, science and our everyday lives.

In May 1960, Theodore Maiman revealed the first laser to an astonished world. Long thought of as "a solution without a problem" lasers are now in common use; from the simple laser pointer to the DVD player, and holography to thermonuclear fusion the properties and capabilities of modern lasers are astonishing. In this talk marking the 50th anniversary of the birth of the laser, Professor John Watson from the University of Aberdeen outlines the steps leading up to the invention of the laser and demonstrates its use in science, industry, commerce and our everyday lives. Some live demonstrations will be used.
