This is the sixth conference of the Irish-Scottish Academic Initiative, in which the participants are the Universities of Aberdeen, Strathclyde and Edinburgh in Scotland and Queen's University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. It is also a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Aberdeen.

The central conference theme is the relationship between Ireland and Scotland and their migrant communities around the world, including migrant Scots in Ireland and migrant Irish in Scotland. The conference also incorporates an annual event in which researchers explore the relationship between language – and particularly minority languages – and politics in the contemporary world.  In addition, the conference initiates two new areas of collaborative work between the ISAI universities: in politics, exploring the politics of devolution, and in gender studies, with panels on ‘Gender, history and heritage’.

The conference has four major strands:

1) Irish and Scottish Diasporas 2) The politics of devolution in Ireland and Scotland 3) Gender, history and heritage 4) Language and politics

In each of these, the conference will be presented with the latest findings by some of the most important researchers in their fields, and the conference will thus continue to build the institutional relationships which have helped make Aberdeen a world leader in Irish and Scottish studies.
