This page contains information related to the activities of this Working Group 1999-2001 (Chair: Graham Pierce). The current Chairman is Dr Jean-Paul Robin from the University of Caen. Prior to 1999 the Chairman was Dr Uwe Piatkowski from the University of Kiel.

WGCEPH reports can be downloaded from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) website.

The annual meeting of WGCEPH was held at the University of Faro, Portugal, 28-30 March 2001.

The terms of reference of this meeting were to:

• update currently available landing statistics and information on fishing effort and discards; explore existing resource survey databases for information about sampled cephalopods in the ICES area;
• compile methods and results available for stock identification and estimation of population size of fished cephalopods;
• compile available data on gear selectivity for cephalopods;
• identify possible precautionary approaches to the management of these cephalopod resources;
• review the results of national and transnational projects collecting data on fished cephalopods, especially those projects studying relationships between abundance and environmental conditions, factors affecting recruitment, migration and distribution patterns of juveniles and adults, and trophic interactions;
• review research priorities in relation to data requirements for fishery assessment and management and identify how this could be undertaken;
• update bibliographic database of cephalopod literature relevant to fisheries, including grey literature;
• identify the future programme of WGCEPH.
