Waste – A Background

The University of Aberdeen produces a significant amount of waste on a daily basis; based on data from financial period 2009 to 2010, it amounts to 4.36 tonnes per day.

The University is committed to reducing waste production and aligning with the principles of the waste hierarchy as set out within the National Waste Plan. This in turn connects with the University’s Estates Strategy:

“the University will strive to be a well-managed institution, utilising its resources to achieve its strategic objectives as efficiently and effectively as possible, through embedding good practice in all of its policies and procedures, committing its resources to enhancing recruitment, training, motivation and retention of staff, developing management systems which are both flexible and transparent, and operating within a financial framework appropriate to a financially well-managed institution.”

The University adopted its first waste policy in August 2007. This sets clear objectives and targets for waste reduction, reuse and recycling. To refer to the policy click here.

The perception of waste is also changing. In some instances it is no longer viewed as an unwanted substance but rather as a resource. It is important that institutions such as the University adopt a ‘cradle to grave’ approach in dealing with our waste.

Before tackling any waste management issue, it is important to have a basic understanding of what the waste is, how it should be disposed of and what issues you are likely to encounter during this process.

Waste management at the University is co-ordinated by many staff and contractors who are responsible for ensuring waste produced by our activities is collected, transported and processed properly.
