Wasting Energy - Why Does it Matter?
Energy is primarily provided from fossil fuel sources in the UK. Wasting energy results in unnecessary depletion of these fossil fuels.
Between 2000 and 2001 UK gas production fell for the first time. Reports in 2004 were that the output capacity for the UK is dropping faster than expected.
Use of energy from fossil fuels results in emission of Carbon Dioxide a greenhouse gas, this contributes to global warming with the consequent effects of climate change.
There has been an increase in the earth’s surface temperature on average by 0.6+/-0.2°C during the last 140 years with the majority of this occurring since 1950.
There is a financial penalty to wasting energy.
After a period where energy prices have been relatively low changes to the way energy is used and supplied, together with gas prices increasingly being linked to oil prices have seen large increases in gas and electricity costs. For the current year 08/09 gas prices are nearly double those for 07/08, and electricity costs are 35% higher.
