University Energy Supplies

Greener Fuel and Power Supplies

By changing the way energy is supplied to the University it is possible to make a considerable difference to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted as a result of energy use at the organisation.

Currently the University purchases 24% of it’s electricity from green sources.

The University of Aberdeen has replaced the Central Heating Station with a Combined Heat and Power plant. This generates electricity and what would otherwise be waste heat is used to heat the campus. This improves the overall efficiency and has operated since May 2007. The reduction in Carbon Dioxide for 2007/08 was 3,713 tonnes.

Future developments will see the introduction of on site equipment to make use of renewable energy sources. The first of these is due to be the installation of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GHSP) at Oceanlab.
