Lighting
Lighting Usage
Turning lights on when entering a room is almost a built in reflex, if there is sufficient daylight why not leave the lights off. If you are the last person to leave a room then please turn the lights off, particularly in areas like lecture theatres.
Tungsten Bulbs
The University is moving to phase out this very inefficient form of lighting. Recently a number of these bulbs have been replaced directly with compact fluorescent lights at Hillhead. Further there are several fittings at Johnmston Hall and it is planned to replace the entire fittings with ones for compact fluorescent lamps.
Fluorescent Lighting
The majority of the lighting at the University is provided by fluorescent tubes. This type of lighting has had various different levels of specification over time. The University aims to fit the latest most energy efficient technology in new builds and major refurbishments.
Automatic Lighting Control
The introduction of automatic lighting control at the University,in recent years has been a major benefit. The system adopted is based on the same principle, but is applied in two distinctly different ways. For corridors presence detection is used, here the sensor detects a person entering the area and switches the lights on for a pre-set period. For offices and rooms a different approach is used, here the user can turn on the lights, or leave them off if desired. In the event the lights are turned on, the presence detection is additionally switched on. If the person leaves the room and does not switch out the lights, the presence detection system will automaitcally turn them off after a pre-set period.
