10:10 and The University
The University is supporting 10:10, This is a campaign that wants organisations and indiviuals to cut their carbon emissions by 10% starting in 2010. The University has set a start date of 10/10/10 for it’s year. For energy and water use in buildings this is focussing on 10 measures the University is planning to implement, and 10 measures University staff and students can carry out themselves. When the year is complete a brief report detailing what the University has achieved will be published.
10 Energy Saving Measures that the University is planning to undertaking include:
- Insulation of part of the Heating Mains at Old Aberdeen
- Installation of Building Management System in 23 St Machar Drive
- Upgrade of Building Management System in the Medical School Library
- Installation of new Boiler Controls at IMS
- Installation of the remote meter reading system
- Trial of lighting conversion at the Fluids Lab in Meston
- Replacement of external lights with more energy efficient lamps
- Cavity wall insulation in Taylor Building
- Free Cooling for Server room at University Office
- Installation of photovoltaics as part of the new Library
10 Energy and Water Saving Measures You Can Do
- Turn off Lecture Theatre Lighting
- Turn off lab equipment overnight and at week ends
- Turn off your computer screen when you pop out of the office
- Request Power Management for your computer
- Turn off plasma screens when areas are unoccupied
- Reduce the number of Fridges and Freezers in operation

Green House Gas Emissions – International and National Targets
With regard to Green House Gas emissions and Renewable Energy there have been several targets set at international and national levels, these include:
Kyoto Target - To cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2% below 1990 by 2008-2012
EU Renewable Energy Target - 10% Renewable by 2010
UK Target - To cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 12.5% below 1990 by 2008-2012
UK Higher Level Target - To cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 20% below 1990 by 2010
Long Term Target - To cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 80% below 1990 by 2050
University CO2 Emissions
Energy use at the University of Aberdeen resulted in the following emissions of carbon dioxide during 2007/2008:
Fuel |
Consumption, kWh |
Carbon Dioxide |
|---|---|---|
Electric |
18,587,935 |
9,721 |
Gas |
62,542,843 |
12,884 |
Oil |
198,720 |
53 |
Steam |
5,495,567 |
1,617 |
Total |
86,825,065 |
24,275 |
To get an idea of the volume of carbon dioxide emitted one tonne of carbon dioxide would fill a balloon 10m in diameter.
