Biodiversity - A Background

Biodiversity is defined within the “Scotland’s Biodiversity – It’s in your hands” document, as:

“the variety of life around us. It represents a new appreciation of nature, with the emphasis on the incredible diversity of varieties, species, habitats and ecosystems that exist all around us, and on their value to humans”

Managing this biodiversity means achieving a balanced existence between humans, their environment and other species.
