Introduction
The Environment Office (EO) was set up in 2006, and has the express aim of reducing the impact the University has on the environment, as well as working towards the University's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.
To this end the EO works with both internal and external stakeholders to develop strategic approaches to University projects that have a significant environmental impact, for example the construction and design of new buildings.
On a day to day basis the EO is responsible for implementing energy and water efficiency measures, adopting the principles of the waste hierarchy, and developing sustainable transport, in compliance with the Estates Section Operational Plan.
At a practical level this means that we give advice and support, to make knowledgeable purchasing, operational, maintenance and disposal decisions, which consider the most effective use of resources. We also assist all University functions in considering the whole life costing of products and utilities.
In addition to this, part of the aim of the EO is to ensure students and staff learn to develop an awareness of, and have a respect for, the environment we live in. This is achieved in part by highlighting what steps the University is taking, and by providing information on steps that individuals can take. On this basis the Environment Office has set up the able campaign:
Are you, able to do your bit?
