Timothy C. Baker received an AB in Cognitive Science from Vassar College in 1999 and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Research interests
Dr Baker's research focuses on the representation of community and religion in Scottish fiction. He is the author of George Mackay Brown and the Philosophy of Community (2009), and is currently working on two monographs, provisionally titled Being Many, Seeming One: Religion and Community in Scottish Fiction, 1808-1878 and Contemporary Scottish Gothic and the Work of Mourning. Other research interests include depictions of disaster in twentieth-century fiction, contemporary American poetry and fiction, Catholicism in Scottish literature, island literature, 1930s Romance revivalism, and the relation between fiction and literary memoir. Recent articles and conference papers include discussions of authors such as Lewis Grassic Gibbon and John Cowper Powys, Ciaran Carson, Jen Hadfield and J.O. Morgan, Catherine Sinclair, James Robertson, and John Burnside and Sarah Moss. Current PhD supervision includes projects on George MacDonald, Barbara Kingsolver, and contemporary Gothic fiction. He welcomes inquiries from potential research students interested in working in any of these areas, or connected areas.
