English Literary Studies
Introduction
The MLitt in English Literary Studies is taught by experts in English, Irish and Scottish literature. It can serve as preparation for more intensive and specialist research at doctoral level, but it is equally appropriate for graduates who simply want the challenge and enjoyment of a further year of literary study. We welcome mature students who wish to re‑experience the stimulation of university after some years away. Working students may take the degree part time over two years.
Course Structure
All students take three research training courses, focussing on issues in literary studies, research methods, the dissemination of scholarly research and writing research proposals. They select four from a wide variety of optional courses, dealing with periods from the Renaissance to the present day; and, over the summer, they write a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words on a subject devised in consultation with their supervisor.

Entrance Requirements
The standard entrance requirement is a good first degree in English, normally at a 2.i level or at a level deemed equivalent by the Head of School. Foreign-language students need to have a minimum of IELTS at 6.5, or TOEFL at 580. The Head of School will also consider applicants with non-standard qualifications.
Cost
Full-time British nationals and students from European Union countries pay £3,315 (08/09) per annum in postgraduate fees and part-time £1,660 (08/09). Students from non-EU countries pay £9,000 (08/09) per annum. Accommodation and food would be expected to cost between £5K and £8K per year. Books and excursions will also cost extra.

For international students, all postgraduate taught programmes, beginning in September 2009, have a deadline of the 1st of July 2009. Any application received after this date, will not be considered for September 2009, but instead will be considered for the next available intake, either January 2010 or September 2010. For more information on the intakes for each programme please visit www.abdn.ac.uk/prospectus/pgrad/ Please note this deadline is to ensure students have sufficient time to complete the application process and apply for their visa, and arrive in Aberdeen in time of the start of their programme.
There is no programme deadline for those students classed as UK/EU for tuition fee purposes.
