Research Degrees

Postgraduate students may study towards the degrees of MSc, MPhil and PhD by research. For a full-time student the time required is typically 1, 2 or 3 years respectively.

The Department has a strong tradition of success in research with an international reputation in a number of areas ranging from sediment transport in rivers to communications protocols. Much of the research is funded by government agencies but a large proportion too is carried out in collaboration with, and financed by, industry. We also have research links with a number of European, American and Russian Universities and research centres, including the UK national centres for hydraulics research (Wallingford) and for synchrotron radiation (Daresbury).

All areas of research in the Department are supported by well-founded laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and computing facilities, the latter including major commercial engineering software.

Graduate studies are supported by a comprehensive monitoring system which has contributed to our excellent completion rates. For information on the areas of research available, and studentships currently available see vaccancies page, under people.
