Electronics & Optical Engineering Group

The central goal is to advance fundamental knowledge and promote applications across the whole electrical, electronics and optical spectrum. The group enjoys an international reputation and profile for its activities in holographic imaging and network protocols. We play leading roles in the European Satellite Network of Excellence (SatNEx) and the European Commission (EC) Information Science and Technology (IST) 3DTV Network of Excellence (NOE). These activities are designed to achieve long-lasting integration of European research centres. Our participation in the recently funded £12.4 M RCUK Digital Hub will research and develop digital technology to transform the lives of people in rural communities.

Research related to power systems and power electronics includes power electronics applications to transmission systems such as HVDC (High Voltage DC Transmission) and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems), with projects developing high power DC transformers, DC circuit brakers and DC transmission networks.
