Professional Groups
Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Professional Group is one of four professional groups within the School of Engineering. The group is responsible for organising teaching activities relating to Mechanical engineering. The group also provides contact with the Mechanical Engineering Companies, and promotes professional activities relating to mechanical engineering within the School of Engineering.
What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineers work on very small products like motors that turn a CD in a CD player, or minaturised mechanisms known as nano-technology. They also work on very big products like cars and aeroplanes.
Mechnical engineering is…
…mostly to do with machines of various sizes that change one form of movement to another, or products that have moving parts.
Mechanical Course and Degree Programmes
There are a wide range of courses and degree programmes in Mechanical Engineering, leading to either a Master of Engineering (MEng) or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).
Most undergraduate students undertake a projcet in their final year, to meet challenges of real-world enginering problems. These projects are linked to the research activities of Staff in the School and can be undertaken with industry sponsorhip or a direct placement with local industry or a research centre in another country.
Leading Research in Mechanical Engineering
Research within the school is organised into research institutes, that span the traditional boundaries between the engineering professions. The Mechanical Group has a strong emphasis on applied projects - with industry involvement in both undergraduate honours project, both small and large postgraduate research projects, and consultancy services. Research in dynamics relates to a wide range of systems with a focus on nonlinear dynamic, control and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to a wide variety of engineering problems. Mechanics of Materials research is conducted in Impact and Explosion Engineering; Structural Integrity; Materials Processing; and within a newly-established Centre for Micro- and Nano-mechanics.
Links to Industry
The Mechanical Professional Group works with local industry, with a special focus on the Oil and Gas sector. It provides innovative ideas and designs to industry, and collaborates in joint research into problems and new technology.Mechanical Professional Institutions
The undergraduate degree programmes in Mechanical Engineering are accredited by the IMechE allowing graduates to progress to Chartered Engineering (CEng) status. All students are encouraged to join one of the professional institutions, which offer a range of opportunities for members and others interested in advancing their careers or finding employment.
